My neighbor just upgraded his PC from Win95 to Win98 so he could add a USB
card for a scanner. His CD-ROM, which was working during the upgrade,
became inaccessible after the upgrade. The drive is a Sony CDU311 (vintage
1996). It shows up in Device Manager as working.
It was slaved to the primary IDE, so I changed it to the secondary IDE.
Still not working. I brought over my Creative 48X CD-ROM and installed as a
slave to the HD. Worked like a charm. I then took the Sony and put it in my
PC running Win98, and had the same problem.
I recall that some of the earlier CD-ROM models were not totally ATAPI
compliant. Could this be the problem? Is there a way to get it to work
under Win98?
