I don't really buy into the notion that windows nt is for
'business' users. I know microsoft positions it that way,
and prices it that way, It's true that nt tends to be a
little behind in terms of availability of certain video
technologies, but that's much more a function of microsoft's
marketing focus than of the os itself.
I would strongly prefer to use nt (i.e., w2k) unless someone
knows of a *substantive* performance or compatibility issue
that would make w98 or wme a better choice.
I think I have a pretty good idea of what I would gain by
using nt. But since I don't routinely use dos/windows, I'd
appreciate hearing what I'd be giving up.
I've really come to *hate* dos/windows. windows is buggy and
leaky (and there's no evidence that it will ever get fixed), and
its cooperative multitasking model (and model for use of other
system resources) makes it subject to the whims and bugs of
whatever rogue program you might be running.
My wife insists on using w95 (with a little w98 thrown in),
on more than one istallation on more than one macine, so
you can't just blame a messed-up install. Hardly a day goes
by when windows doesn't hang or crash.
The notion that an os that doesn't crash frequently is only
appropriate for 'business' users is a slap in the face of
mere 'ordinary' users.
