A simple solution: ask to smell the fish first, before you buy it. I always
do this and I refuse to buy anything with an odor. If they won't let me
smell the fish, I don't deal with them. And I am never afraid to decline to
buy if the fish doesn't pass the smell test.
Fresh Fields/Whole Foods tends to have excellent fish although quite
expensive. Upscale supermarkets are sometimes okay. It is hard to find a
fishmarket where I live now, in Northern Virginia, so I eat a lot less fish
:-(
