i think it does !

ethymologically radical come from radix which mean root. Being radical means
no more that dealing with problem by adressing their root cause.
extremist might be more suitable to express marginal way of eating ( not
shared by many)
for now paleo diet is both radical and extremist on its way to
"normalisation".
Personally i am attracted to radical ideas because the focus is off fixing
problems that could be avoided in the first place. The deep root of all
problems is that there is no problems in the first place there is only
solutions. The problem arise when we block them out .
extremist diets might stay extremist but they do make the mainstream move
away from unhealthy inertia.
some ideas spread by vegans have beneficial influence to attract peoples
toward healthier eating.
the idea that the way we raise , kill, sale and eat animals ,being
unhealthy , is not off mark ,even paleo convinced could learn from that.

that what radical means to look for common "ground" ( roots)

but may be i am just an extremist.
