Sure, I've already done it. Check your library for:

"Big Column Repairs", technical notes on restoration of 18" dia. by 20' tall
and larger columns, Old-House Journal, Sept. 1988. (covers evaluating
conditions, common problems, wood/epoxy repair, stave replacement, and
plugging woodpecker holes, remember: you've got to keep your woodpecker
holes plugged)
