Borrow an external modem from someone and try connecting.
It is possible that your new modem is WinModem and 3-year-old pc is
likely to be less than pentium-100... WinModems want a lot of cpu
power, esp. when connecting.
It is also possible that your login scripts to the provider are bad -
this will be probable if the error repeats itself on the hardware modem.
