Hello experts
Recently we connected two users w/ PC Compatible systems to the internet via
cable/DSL routers. (two differnet sites - different brand cable/DSL routers -
one Linksys and one Netgear)
Both systems are running Windows 98
One system is a PC Compatible no-name brand
One system is a Compaq.
The PC Compatible was connected to DSL directly before introducing the router.
Problems arose after connecting the system to the router and connecting another
computer to the router for peer-to-peer networking
On the PC Compatible, we're unable to get out to the internet via the router.
We had to take the router out of the loop - connecting directly to the DSL modem
- in order to regain internet access. But the problems persist even though
we're not using the router now.
The Compaq was stand alone and did not have a NIC b4 connecting it to the LAN
and to the internet via the DSL router.
Each computer now exhibits similar symptoms. They both spontaneously reboot
when connected to the internet. They also crash when attempting to run other
applications - I'm not sure which applications at this point.
Neither computer had been maintained b4 the connection through DSL router was
set up (regular file checking, defragging, virus scanning, etc.).
I've researched Microsoft and plowed through search engines. I've found
suggestions ranging from corrupted files to PCI IRQ handling issues to power
issues. I'd be greatful for any feed back you folks can provide.
thank you all for your input
Chris
