Hi Kathleen,
If you are using Windows, you don't even need to add a string. Just double
click modems in control panel, highlight your double click your modem, and
move the slider to off. A slight caveat to this, at least on mine, I had to
make the same setting for my modem in the properties of my dial-up account
under My Computer.
Hope this is some help.

Several months back, someone posted a simple addition to a modem string that
would turn off the volume of the screeching modem! I very happily used it
for months, but naturally, my computer crashed and to make a common long
story short, I lost all that good info.
Next question is probably rather obvious! Can someone please tell me what
that addition was and how I get to the place where I add it to the string? I
have lost my memory (or mind) on that too!
Thank you in advance!
