This sounds to me like the hard drive you exchanged out is not bootable
(being the Invalid System Disk) it says to remove disk and press any key to
continue because it isn't differentiating between a removable disk and a
non-removable disk.  If you were to boot off of a floppy disk and check if
the system files were on that Hard Drive, you would probably find that they
are not.  It is also possible that the newly put in Hard Drive had gone bad
as well.
