Thursday, September 7th, 2000

11:45 am Registration, 12:00 pm Luncheon and Book Signing
Nigeria, America's largest trading partner in Africa, will be highlighted
when President Clinton arrives there for an invitational visit scheduled for
August 25-27th. Clinton is to meet with recently elected President Olusegun
Obasanjo to "underscore [America's] support for Nigeria's impressive
democratic transformation...and for [its] leadership role in the region."
In This House Has Fallen, Maier takes the reader on a journey around Nigeria
to meet the people and see the places that have shaped this country. From
the oil-rich Niger Delta to the religiously volatile northern region, Maier
paints a stirring and sometimes shocking picture of Nigeria's tragedies and
its hope for the future.
From 1986-1996, Maier served as the African correspondent for The
Independent newspaper in London and a contributor to the Washington Post and
The Economist. Maier has also written two other books on Africa, which
received glowing reviews internationally.
Co-sponsored by University of Washington Bookstore.
Memebers and co-sponsors $10, non-members $15 (includes lunch).
To register, call (206) 441-5910.
All registrations and cancellations must be received by 5pm on September 1,
2000.
