What we usually call "popcorn" concrete here is where a pour hasn't been
vibrated enough to get the air out and the slurry and aggregate all gelled
together nice and smooth-like. Definitely not intentional or what would
happily be referred to as "architectural".
But then, there was also a manufacturer of sawable and nailable concrete
logs here who mixed vermiculite and white popcorn styrofoam chips and
sawdust into a cement mix for making his lightweight, modular, concrete,
"logs" and blocks. He said they had great insulating qualities and were
suitable for
"do-it-yourself-carpenter-builders" who wanted to avoid hiring a mason but
wanted a finished product that looked like masonry. Saw a few houses
built with them before he left town.
