In addition to the troubleshooting guide, I have found that if you are
accessing the scanner from a program *not* supplies by HP (such as
OmniPage, Paint Shop Pro, Irfanview, etc.), the programs that HP supplies
which are activated on startup (and sit in your system tray), often
generate conflicts.
I usually have to de-activate these programs before using other scanner
software to prevent these conflicts.
