“I have no idea dad.” Stephanie said. Then she whispered to her dad,
“You know how those computer nerds are.”

Gary chuckled “Yes hon, I know how those computer nerds are.” He winked
at Hannah.

Gary went and got the box of junk. In it the girls found toy trucks,
children’s books, a necklace with a weird symbol on it, and a jewelry
box. Hannah opened the jewelry box. In it was a small, round key.

Hannah’s eyes got wide, “Look what I found Steph!”

Stephanie was mesmerized by the symbol on the pendant hanging from the
necklace she had just found “Yeah that’s nice.”

Hannah went over to her, got in her face, and said, “Look, I think I
found the key to the door!”

Suddenly Stephanie snapped out of her trance, “You found the key. You
found the key!”

They stared at each other for a few minutes. Then Hannah handed
Stephanie the key “Here, you are the adventurous one, you try the key.”

Nervously, Stephanie said, “Why should I have all the fun. You do it.”

“What’s wrong, you afraid of a little broom closet?” Hannah said. She
giggled as she put the key in the keyhole. “Don’t worry, sis, I’ll
protect you from the big bad brooms!”

As Hannah opened the door, a foggy mist came towards them. They went
through the door. The mist cleared. What they beheld was every disabled
person’s paradise. No steps to any of the buildings, automatic doors for
every building, and everything was at a lower level so a person in a
wheelchair could have easy access to it.

“Where are we Hannah?” Stephanie asked anxiously.

Hannah looked around. She could not believe what she saw. It was the
kind of excitement you feel when you had just opened your favorite
Christmas gift. Her eyes lit up with delight as they passed some totally
accessible buildings. It was familiar, but strange to her. “I don’t know
Stephanie, come on.”

As they drove along, Stephanie stayed right next to Hannah. They noticed
at every phone there was a TDD, a communication device for the deaf.
There were even one-hour wheelchair repair shops on every other corner.
As they drove, they both wondered why they had never heard of this place
before.

They soon ran into a tall man with a hand-held device. They tried to
talk with him, but he seemed to be ignoring them. Then Hannah noticed a
sign that read: MY NAME IS HENRY, I’M DEAF. PLEASE TALK INTO MY
COMMUNICATION DEVICE.

Hannah wheeled closer to Henry and tapped his hand, he turned around, she
said, “Excuse me, sir, my name is Hannah, and this is my sister
Stephanie.” She looked around “Where are we?”

As Hannah talked, the communication device turned her words into text on
the screen of the communication device. When he typed into it, it spoke
the words he typed. He said, “Oh you found a door.”

Stephanie awkwardly shifted her body around in her seat, “Yeah, so?”

Henry motioned for them to follow him. He took them to this huge
building. It looked like the City Hall building back home. Big marble
pillars reached from the top of the building to the bottom. Glass
windows covered the sides of the building. There was one exception
though. Instead of stairs, there were ramps everywhere. They both
thought this was cool. The sign above the building read: “Welcome to
Access-Land”.

Stephanie pointed to the symbol on the sign, “Look Hannah, it’s the same
symbol on the pendant that I found.”

They rolled into the building. Henry pushed a button to a door, which
had a gold sign that read, “President of Access-Land”. Stephanie and
Hannah gulped hard as they entered the office. Behind the desk sat a
woman.

She rolled out from behind the desk. “Hi, my name is Crystal.”

“Hi”, Hannah nervously said, “My name is Hannah and this is my sister
Stephanie.”

Crystal smiled, “You two are twins, aren’t you.”
