I recently had a conference call with 2 registered dieticians with American
Dairy Queen. In a nutshell....Hamburger patties are 100% beef and therefore
GF; however the marinated chicken breast (grilled) is NOT GF. At this time,
Chocolate, Vanilla and nonfat Yogurt soft serves are gluten free, except
"Certain Dairy Queen stores use a soft serve mix that varies from the mix
used by stores in the rest of the country and on which this information is
based. We advise all who inquire to check all of this information with
their local DQ store." These stores are in the Carolinas and may even
extend as far north as New Jersey.....There are 300 of these non-system
softserve DQ's in that area. Mr. Misty slush drink is GF.
ADQ does NOT certify any of their toppings and cone coatings as gluten-free
because there are two separate food supplying systems available to DQ
owners. However, their supplier of manufactured novelties (there is only
one of these) informs them that the following items are gluten-free:
Dennis the Menace(r) Bar
Lemon Freez'r(r)
Cherry-Lime Freez'r(r)
DQ(r) Fudge Bar
DQ(r) Raspberry Vanilla Bar
DQ(r) Vanilla Orange Bar
DQ(r) Vanilla Fudge Bar
Starkiss(r) Bars
While I NEVER advocate the taste test to "see" if an item is GF, I myself do
ingest the chocolate cone coating with no problem and cannot see an
offending item on the label. AND AGAIN, when ordering a blizzard or breeze
with a GF candy or fruit topping in it, be sure to request that the mixing
spindle be rinsed thoroughly to make sure no gluten-containing topping from
a previous blizzard gets into yours. As always if you have a question about
a product try to ask it of the manager and/or owner at a non-busy time of
the day not lunch hour, dinner hour, or in the midst of a Little League
assault.
Dairy Queen is working toward including special dietery information at their
website www.dairyqueen.com. Currently there is no nutrition/special diet
info at this site. They are also working toward removing the wheat and whey
from their french fries, but even when those get into the system won't
recommend them as gluten-free for fear of cross-contamination in smaller
stores that cook everything (breaded and fries) in one oil fryer.
