Subject: Window-Eyes 4.0 beta2!

We promised we would listen; we promised we wanted your feedback; we
promised you the best! Here it is--read on!

Window-Eyes 4.0 beta 2 has been released. Although this beta is available
for everyone to try, you must have Window-Eyes 3.0 or 3.1 or 4.0 beta 1
(retail or demo version) already installed. We encourage you to make a
backup of your current Window-Eyes directory before installing this beta.

There is also a readme file that you must read before installing. This is
very important and will allow you to enjoy all the exciting new features
and benefits of 4.0 beta 2. We want you to try out every feature and to
give us feedback if something does not work the way it was advertised. We
want feedback whether it's good or bad!

If you are already running beta 1 then simply install beta 2 on top of it.
If you haven't looked at beta 1 but wish to try beta 2 simply install it
over an existing Window-Eyes 3.0 or 3.1 (retail or demo).

I won't list all the new features that beta 1 offered here but they can
certainly be found in the readme, which comes with all betas. However,
after receiving hundreds and hundreds of fantastic feedback from you our
users regarding beta 1 we decided to release beta 2 ahead of schedule.
The majority of changes from beta 1 to beta 2 are a direct result of your
feedback. So please keep it coming. Following is what has changed
between betas:

-----------------------------

We fixed routing problems in listviews in Forte Agent and Outlook.

We fixed a crash in Internet Explorer that could happen if you pressed
enter on a button that brought up a message box. This fix should also
improve general stability.

We have separated the Alva 240 and 280 displays from the other Alva
displays.

We now support the Alva 440 and 480 braille display in parallel mode.

We now support the VARIO/RBT40 (Rabbit) braille display in its native mode
only. The Vario cannot be emulating any other display for Window-Eyes to
work with it. It must be configured for its native Vario mode.

We now support the Handy Tech braille displays.

We now support the Braillex EL (all models), Braillex 2D Screen, and
Braillex Compact/Tiny/2D Lite braille displays.

We now support the BrailleNote as a braille display.

We fixed a problem if you had the shortcuts, option, or descriptions menu
verbosity settings turned off they would not be honored when backing out
of the start menu or other MSAA menus.

We fixed a problem if you had the menu closed verbosity setting turned off
speech would not read all items when backing out of the start menu or any
other MSAA menus.

We fixed a problem in the context sensitive help dialog that prevented you
from pressing the enter key to place a return in the help text if the edit
box was set to allow you to type text as soon as you brought up the dialog
(in other words, for editing help for the first time).

We made the save set file and all dictionaries and all of the options for
saving all dictionaries much faster.

We fixed a problem with merging clips for speak windows which will also
improve stability.

We fixed the pure virtual function error that happened when saving in
Office 2000 applications.

We fixed a crash that happened when tabbing to the reclassed listviews on
the index tab in Word 2000 help.

We fixed two major crashes in gwm32.

Routing to listviews on the desktop now routes to the correct place so
that you can right click the item.

We fixed a system hang that occurred if you pressed, "alt t, q, enter,
shift-tab, right arrow" in WP 9 to get to the quick words option.

We fixed a problem in the Window-Eyes control panel where if you pressed
"alt space, escape" the menus would stop reading.

We fixed problems in Outlook Express that prevented us from reading the
number of messages in the treeview of mailboxes. Now when you arrow
through the different mailboxes, the number you hear after the mailbox
name indicated the number of unread messages.

We made changes that allow listviews, treeviews, and tab controls to work
better after they are reclassed. Note that if you try to reclass
something that isn't really one of these controls to one of the
above-mentioned controls, you have an increased chance of getting a crash,
but this caveat goes for all controls when reclassing. We felt that this
change was worth it since it makes reclassing to the above-mentioned
controls much more useful when they work. This also helps listviews and
treeviews created by Visual Basic and listviews in Office 97, Office 2000,
and Outlook Express.

We made changes to the word enhanced cursoring key option. This option
now considers the apostrophe character to be part of a word. Note that
WordPad has a bug that will land you on the apostrophe character when
moving right and then land you on the word, but when moving to the left it
skips the word and goes directly to the apostrophe. We will now read the
word twice in the case of moving to the right which is unavoidable unless
we chose to not read the word, which would cause the word to not be spoken
when moving to the left.

We fixed problems reading the listview of files in the open and save as
dialogs in Office 2000.

We fixed many problems of graphic labels not sticking. Note that this
problem could happen in WE 3.1, but it got much worse in the beta due to a
performance optimization.

We have changed the split mixed case option. The old on behavior has been
changed to be on with acronyms. The new on option will not spell words
that are all caps such as IBM.

We fixed a word enhanced problem where Window-Eyes would read garbage if
you landed on a space character in Word 2000.

We worked around a Microsoft bug where IE 5.5 would crash in mshtml.dll in
some cases when we focused a link.

We fixed some incorrect field labels in the select user window and copy
window settings dialogs.

We fixed problems with the scroll left and right braille functions.

We fixed the double speaking of "bypass" with the bypass hotkey in cases
where interruptability wasn't set to all keys or word mode was on.

We no longer lock SAPI engine files if SAPI isn't being used as the
synthesizer which will allow you to update SAPI files without having to
reboot and will also use less memory.

We have made a couple of general performance improvements that should help
with OSM creation and moving around the screen with the mouse and caret.

-------------------------------

Just go to our web page at http://www.gwmicro.com and look for the
appropriate link close to the top of the main frame.

Remember, the point of this beta is for you to try out the advertised
features. Although we want your suggestions for future releases, they
won't make it into 4.0.

Remember too that if you purchase 3.1 now, you can run the new beta and it
will not act like a demo. Also, if you purchase 3.1 now, you can download
the actual 4.0 version free of charge when it is released. You have
absolutely nothing to lose and the chance to bring the world to your ears
and fingers without timing out after thirty minutes.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Enjoy!
