First , thanks for the responses, however I have since downloaded the latest mobo Flash BIOS update ( ver. 1005C) from ASUS and it appears I am out of the woods for now.
I tried doing the VIA 4 in 1 driver as Jun suggested after the bios update but it reurned my problem once again.
Next I wil try re- activate the ATA 100 and re-connect the HDD there again.
wil keep you posted.
Again thanks for the inputs.

Yeah, you need to install VIA 4in1 driver provided on ASUS cd (4.24) or
download the latest 4in1 4.25 from VIA web. If this doesn't help, try update
the video driver, I too have A7V and MX card, I've found that reference
drive 6.31 (from nVidia) works best. If you like, you can also try beta
nVidia driver (eg. 6.47), beta drive is currently the fastest, but not at
stable as official 6.31 driver. Last possibility, it is possible that AGP
port is faulty or the video card is faulty or need to flash the video BIOS.
