The CT directory grew out of a series of four workshops I gave in
Connecticut in the spring of 1998 for the CT Trust for Hist. Preservation.
A Connecticut insurance company (Middlesex Mutual Assurance) wanted to send
so many employees to the workshops that we ended up putting on a special
two day workshop just for the insurance company. They sent about 50 people
altogether. I wound up consulting for the insurance company as they
developed and deployed a new insurance policy for historic home owners. One
of the things I wanted for the original workshop series participants was a
directory of preservation tradespeople, but the Trust's existing directory
was so outdated they did not want to distribute it. As I was working with
both the CT Trust and the insurance company I saw that the needs of both
could be served if the insurance company could help sponsor an update of
the Trust's directory. It did and the Trust hired Greg Galvin to develop
the directory in the spring and summer of 1999. I consider making this
connection one of my more effective moments.
