Hi, your integrated trackball works in a similar fashion
as a mouse, just inverted. Inside you should find 2
interupter wheels and 2 photocells making up the
x and y axis.

If you're comfortable dropping the pan on your
laptop you can clean these components with
gentle bursts of air.

If you decide to send it in for service, they'll
probally replace the trackball unit. Ballpark
estimate $120 -$150US parts/labor based
on units I've serviced.You may want to keep
using the external ps/2 since this is an older
laptop.
