As mentioned before, make sure you know what you're buying - look
specifically for the words "line conditioning", as many UPS' don't clean the
voltage, they only switch in when the voltage drops below a certain level.

As for pricy, while $300 looks like a lot of money, compare it to what I had
to endure recently as the result of a spike:
1) New modem ($75)
2) 50+ hours troubleshooting
3) 2 weeks' lost time on the system
4) New motherboard ($80)

Wish I'd spent the $300.
