I've never heard of oyster mushrooms growing anywhere but wood.  I used to
mushroom hunt extensively when I lived up north, and have enjoyed them often.
 I wouldn't trust them, myself, if not found in a "shelf" type formation on
rotting wood.
There are very few edible safe mushrooms that grown directly in the dirt, but
there are some very good ones like field mushrooms (campestris?) that show up
right in the lawn.  Do you have a REALLY good mushroom guide?
