mags,

There's still a predominantly "blue-collar" attitude here when it comes to
pwd's. Case in point: it's often difficult to find a disabled parking place
because so many able-bodied people can get their MD to fill out the
paperwork for the placard. I try not to use mine unless I'm feeling very,
very crappy, but when I need it....I need it! A good friend, who happens to
be my family doctor, said that he's always getting requests from what he
calls "The Wal-Mart crowd" for placards. He says they're generally retired,
often overweight, and they just want the card because they're too damn lazy
to walk from the back end of the lot. Makes him mad because he says walking
is probably the best thing these people could do for themselves.

Columbus is a bit of an oasis in this rust-belt state because we have so
many government offices and colleges/universities. The mindset toward the
disabled is much different than in Cleveland.

You're in CA., right? Boy, if she could afford the move, it might be the
right thing for her.

Yes kyle... a new friend will be visiting me from ohio. she says that ucp
has
teamed up with mental heath/mr, and is not good at services for non MR
people, so she's thinking abt moving here. it's a shame. and that in
cleveland, she says paratransit costs $45.00 per ride! Ack!
