Another list I'm on has gotten into a heated discussion of kava kava. Some
of the debate has been around use of this and any other drugs by ancient
societies.

I can't believe that it would be wise to use sedatives or any other
mind-altering substances on a regular basis when you live in a dangerous
environment. On the other hand, we do have receptors and pleasure centres
for a lot of substances, so why wouldn't our ancestors have pursued these?

Does anyone have any info or theories on recreational or ceremonial drug use
by paleo people?

Irene
