Well, there is more than one hechsher (kosher symbol) -- each supervising
rabbinical group has its own.  There's OU (U inside circle), OK, Kof-K,
star-K, etc.  I've seen lots and lots of symbols, including a lion, a V, a
BK, square-K, etc.

A clue is to look for the words "parve" or "pareve".  This is from the
Yiddish for "that which is neither meat nor dairy".
