Deborah,

You know, I think this kind of thing is much harder on someone who has been
active and incredibly productive all their life. Betty, I don't know if
your mom was an independent sort before her surgery, but I have a friend
who's Dad recently underwent colon surgery for the same reason and he was
just as nasty as could be to his family for a while. He's normally very
active and independent--likes things "just so". He did come around after a
bit, but Laura's grandma got sour when she moved from her home to assisted
living. She had been used to doing everything at her house (repairs, etc.)
for 20 years after her husband died, loved to garden, shop, sew, etc. When
she wasn't capable of doing those things for a while she stopped trying to
do them--even after she was physically capable again. Depression's a
drag--for the ill individual and the caregiver.

Has your mom seen a psychologist ? Sometimes people who have went through
what she has just went through make them depressed.
