That's very good to hear and I'm glad to know it. There was one captain I
worked for who was a jerk all the time. He'd yell for no reason and treated
us all like crap. It was pretty bad. Finally one day the Chief called us
all together when this guy had been out for a while and announced that he was
in rehab for a cocaine problem and hoped to have all of our support. I felt
like I wanted to be supportive so I called him a few times to let him know
that, but part of me was extremely angry because I realized his drug problem
was why we were all put through hell. I didn't tell him that though. He was
in rehab and I didn't think it would do anything but make him feel worse.
But that was a long time ago. I hope he's okay now.

The type of "molly coddling" you described is stringently
restricted now in EMS services due primarily due to litigious situations
resulting from personnel being less than fit for duty. I have to say that
the Memmphis Fire Department is way ahead of the Police Department here,
even though a good friend is interim Police Director(Chief). The Director
of Fire Services took my class on Alcohol and Drug Services. I was really
impressed. Most guys in that position, let you know immediately hos
important they are. This guy set through
the whole semester and I didn't know who he was until the last week of
class. True humility!!! I was impressed to say the least.
