Association for Preservation Technology (APT) Conference & Workshops 2001
Asilomar-Monterey Peninsula-California

Conservation of Historic Adobe

October 8-10, 2001

This three-day "hands-on" workshop will focus on historic adobe, its
properties, and the structural use and care of adobe structures. Sessions
will feature Properties of the material; Structural uses; Common problems and
failures; Repairs; Associated Landscaping; Documentation; Finishes; and
Maintenance. "Hands-on" instruction at San Juan Bautista SHP will include
opportunities to practice plastering, lime plastering, simple repairs, brick
making, and whitewashing. Discussions will also address modern uses and
associated materials, such as "Stabilized Adobe," and seismic reinforcement.
Copies of the Cornerstones Foundation publication Adobe Architecture
Conservation Handbook will be provided to all course attendees. The workshop
is being offered as a post conference technical workshop of the Association
for Preservation Technology International Conference, October 3-7, 2001. The
conference and workshop is being co-sponsored by the National Park Service,
California Department of Parks and Recreation, California Preservation
Foundation, and US/ICOMOS.

LOCATION: San Juan Bautista State Historic Park, Pacific Grove, California


COST: $500 Registration Fee.

Lodging is available for participants at the Asilomar Center. Lodging costs
for participants for this course are not included in the registration fee.
