There is a beautiful art deco building that turns the corner of Temple and
Chapel streets in New Haven. The retractable awnings are encased in bronze
boxes to enhance the bronze and mahogany display windows. (The building was
built for Michael's Jewelers each window was like a little jewel box.)
While researching I found black and whites of the building in full flight.
While examining I found that they were still in good shape and could be
cranked out by hand. The canvas on a few, not often used, was still bright
blue and white. The present tenant is a Subway franchise. The owner of the
shoppe was very excited to see the awnings. Last I went by he had painted
all the interior mahogany subway blue!
Best,
Leland
