Why is this such a foreign idea to you?  Do we stop treating our
troops like
humans when we know they are going to be killed in a war?  Since
everybody
and everything is going to die anyway,  should we NOT bother to allow
them a
reasonable life?  And the real biggie - if a new creature or some
humans
suddenly decided that we were only 'food' - would that make it OK to
torture
or discount us if we were going to be eaten?

Sorry - this anthropocentric attitude that everything except us is
dispensable and worth nothing just irritates the hell out of me.
