WGBH's Motion Picture Access Project is pleased to announce that the
provocative thriller, "8mm", will be accessible to deaf, hard-of-hearing,
blind, and visually impaired moviegoers in the Atlanta, Chicago, Los
Angeles, and Seattle areas, thanks to a collaboration with General Cinema
Theatres, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Digital Theater Systems.

"8mm" is a Columbia Pictures film starring Nicholas Cage and Joaquin
Phoenix. It tells the story of a small-town private investigator whose
life is turned upside down when he discovers a disturbing piece of crudely
shot eight millimeter film. The film opens on February 26, 1999.

"8mm" will be available with the Rear Window Captioning System and DVS
Theatrical at the following theaters:

General Cinema Sherman Oaks 2
4500 Van Nuys Boulevard
Sherman Oaks, California
(818) 986-9660 or (818) 986-3078

General Cinema Pacific Place 11
At 6th and Pine Streets in Downtown Seattle
Seattle, Washington
(206) 652-2404 or (206) 652-8908

General Cinema Yorktown 18 Cinema
Highland Avenue and Butterfield Road
(Adjacent to Yorktown Shopping Center)
Lombard, Illinois
(630) 495-0010 or (630) 495-0012

General Cinema Parkway Pointe 15
One mile south of Interstate 285 on Cobb Parkway
(Next to Borders)
Atlanta, Georgia
(770) 937-0078 or (770) 937-0730

Because a limited number of caption reflectors and headsets are available, patrons are encouraged to arrive at the theatre at least 30 minutes before the start of the film. There is no additional charge for these systemsjust the cost of a regular movie ticket. Movie schedules will vary, so please call the theaters to find out about showtimes. Please note that showtimes are often not set until just before a movie opens, so the theaters will probably not have this information until February 25.

It is also important be aware that "8mm" is rated R and contains graphic material (nudity, violence, and sexual situations) that some viewers may find disturbing. Children under 17 will only be admitted when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The Motion Picture Access Project is working to bring the Rear Window Captioning System and DVS Theatrical to theaters across the country and to make closed captions and descriptive narration available for more films of all kinds.
