Typical runs for parallel port connections are, I think I recall, no more
than about 25 feet, and serial connections are limited to about 125 feet
(unless you insert modems or repeaters). UTP network segments can span 100
meters -- more than 300 feet -- and some other network cable technologies can
exceed that (and repeaters can increase this distance too).
The *point* of a print server is to share a resource -- the printer -- with
a bunch of users, but it does also have the effect that you desire.
