You can use NDIAGS together with a specially wired connector to test the
port... I think the layout of the connector is on the Net somewhere.

You can replace the failing port with a replacement ISA or PCI card that
will take its function. You will have to disable the port in
"Integrated peripherals" section in BIOS. The card runs $10-20.
