Most probable cause is a failed drive. However, less likely but worth
checking are:
1. Drive connectors
a. Re-seat them
b. Change the ribbon cable
2. Which Soyo mobo? Some Soyo mobos have a known problem with losing the
CD-ROM drive. Go to the Soyo web site and look around for a fix. However,
since W9x finds it after removing it, I do not suspect this is the problem.
Why are you loading DOS drivers for the CD-ROM in the autoexec file? I would
REM out the line in the autoexec file and try again or use the F8 key on
boot up when it says STARTING WINDOWS and select step by step and answer No
to that line. Also if your config.sys file loads a DOS driver for the drive,
do the same for it.
