Boy, that's quite a generalization. Could you post
your sources please?
I would agree that short burst of higher intensity
exercise were probably the norm, rather than extended
aerobic type exercise. However, I doubt that they
excluded all forms of aerobics. Some exercise
theorists believe that other activities, such as
games, dancing, and eventually religious rituals
(bending, bowing, genuflecting, etc.) were all natural
developments designed to keep folks "in shape" when
they were not hard at work.
