I am forwarding this article, because the UNAM strike and the US
supported Mexican dictatorship's efforts to break this strike are
related to the events in Seattle. Both events involve demonstrators
protesting neo-liberalist policies that are causing uprisings throughout
Latin America against US dictated economic and military policies.
The success or failure of the UNAM strikers will impact the July Mexican
presidential elections. At stake, is the ability of the US and its
Mexican allies to maintain control of Mexico through the US supported
PRI dictatorship. The PRI is a dictatorship that rotates its leader
every 6 years via farcical and phony elections. Though this
mechanism, it has become the world's longest standing dictatorship.
One that has lasted 3/4 of a century.
The bipartisan support of Mexico's PRI dictatorship is one of America's
dirtiest secrets. George Bush has positioned himself as the
candidate who most repesents himself as being capable of maintaining the
public relations of amistad and alliance between The US and the Mexican
nomenclature. But Al Gore has played this angle, also.
The UNAM strikers are fighting for all of us. They deserve any
support we can give them. In some US cities, demonstrations have
been held at the Mexican consulates.
Stop US support for the Mexican dictatorship. Expose the US
government support for militarizing Mexico.
