As it was explained to me, never having traveled to Tiawan,
nearly all notebook computer are produced by two companies
in Tiawan. They build them for nearly all the companies that sell
them, based on their particular specifications, companies such
as Dell, Compaq, IBM and the others. They are nearly all
proprietary.

Building them from scratch is quite difficult since the parts are not
readily available off the shelf like a standard PC and the combined
cost of all the components will far exceed the cost of buying a ready
built unit.

Notebooks/Laptops is a very specialized industry, one that has never
translated into our vocation/avocation due to the lack of supply of off
the shelf components.
