Gambia-L mailing list is for Gambians and friends of The Gambia to discuss Gambia related issues. GAMBIA-L is aimed at providing Gambians and those interested in Gambian and related issues, a means to communicate with each other, and exchange ideas and information of common interest. In the process, it is hoped that a spirit of cooperation, of exchange of ideas, of healthy debate and dialogue for the National good will be cultivated. True, ours might not be one of the biggest lists, but we certainly can make it one of the very best in cyberspace.

I find it extremely despecable, intriguing, disturbing and horrendous seeing the amount of profanity poured on Honourable Fatoumata Jawara. This woman has endured excruciating pain and torture. Our women folks are our mothers, sisters, aunts, daughters, grand mothers, great aunts, nieces. I cannot understand how any human being who deserves to be called a human will enjoy and make fun of sexual offences. This is the lowest point of humanity. Politics is about ideas and the battle of ideas. Our honourable women deserve respect. Those in the Western world should be very careful of ridiculing victims of sexual assault. I

The Status Of The White Paper: On The Report Of The Janneh Commission
The debate has started. Foroyaa is being asked to explain whether the President has power to ban people from holding public office just because of the report of a commission of inquiry. It is therefore important for the National Council for Civic Education to carry out its constitutional mandate in assisting the citizenry to know the provisions of the Constitution so that the Gambian people will continue to speak its language with clarity.

I think the treatment of Momodou Sabally was a little bit harsh. He was operating in a very hostile environment and may have even been coerced into certain decisions. Just my opinion

Today The Gambia is 49 years old. It was this day in 1970 that every single Gambian was no longer a slave and subject of Her Imperial Majesty the Queen of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It was on this day that every single Gambian became equal to the other. It was this day that the territorial integrity of The Gambia was restored. It was on this day that a Gambian became a President and a commander in Chief. It was this day that real independence was achieved.

A famous Africanist once said something to the effect that in terms of development, Africa has remained prostrate since independence. While other continents are more or less up on their feet and walking, even if their walk is a stagger, Africa remains unable to rise up to her feet, even to stand up straight. Africa is mired in an ever rising pile of difficulties and complications, even as more and more wealth is discovered on the continent; even as more and more brilliant minds are born and bred on the continent. Thanks for the update. Appreciated and I have enjoyed reading it. Going forward, communication would be critical for the TRRC. And luckily, in addition to English, you also speak very impeccably - all the three main Gambian languages: Pulaar, Mandinka and Wolof. So, these language skills of yours can facilitate healthy and ongoing interaction between the TRRC and the Gambian public. This new openness in Gambian society is a step in the right direction - very good for the country’s nascent democracy.
Thank you Coach. Glad you enjoyed reading the update. Yes, communication is indeed key in this process.

Gambia on a roll. That’s how I called my recent critique of Elizabeth Ohene’s omission of Gambia from her story on the fall of veteran leaders in Africa 2017. The title was deliberate. I knew it would raise some eyebrows in some quarters of Gambian public opinion, and for good reasons too. And it was absolutely not to romanticize our momentous achievement in kicking a dictator out of power by peaceful means and epic nationalism. One appreciates the daunting challenges our country faces as we enter 2018. We all

Happy birthday to our new and beautiful Gambia! Exactly one year ago, Gambians decided that we are sick and tired of Jammeh’s dictatorship and his unhealthy politics of insults, tribal bigotry and rampant squandering of pour national resources. The majority of Gambians rallied around the Coalition candidate and sent the despot packing, once and for all. A lot of water has flowed under the proverbial bridge ever since, some of it very good; some not so good. Nevertheless, it has been a great year for Gambians, especially for those of us who were

Today, the slogan ‘New Gambia’ is almost on everybody’s lips. It is easy to imagine that the phrase is being used to depict the period after Jammeh’s autocratic regime when democratic ideals and basic universal human rights were suspended and trampled upon. Although the Jammeh regime’s demise may have given the term ‘New Gambia” greater public recognition, it is essential that we open up the field of discussion centred around our shared responsibility in shaping the direction of travel of the new Gambia.

If you think democracy is hard, try dictatorship. Try a system where one man assumes absolute power, usurps the rights of everyone in the country, turns himself into a malignant god on earth, kills innocent people left right and center, has a horde of minions telling him he will live forever, and assumes a monopoly on what constitutes wrong or right, truth or lies, justice or injustice and wisdom or foolery. If you think democracy is hard, try a system in which a village idiot struts around clad in the fake garbs

A recent BBC Newshour Extra program hosted a panel that discussed the question, “Is Democracy working for Africa?” This question is as old as African independence. In fact, prior to independence, colonial authorities and African nationalists had debated whether Africa was ready for self-rule and therefore the practice of democracy characteristic of the western nation nation-state system they would be presiding over after independence. And while the answers given by the BBC panelists provided interesting perspectives, they were not new either. Three of them made strong arguments in favor of

The revelations are often mind-blowing, maddening, and mirth-inspiring. They are always edifying in the ways of human beings. They are very revealing in the workings of the shadow state: the parallel institutions and individuals created by corrupt African rulers in order to by-bass regular channels of doing government business in pursuit of their own personal agendas. The unfolding tragi-comic drama of the Janneh commission reveals part of the inner workings of the shadow state. Other parts of Jammeh’s shadow state will be revealed through other investigative mechanisms like the proposed truth
This is for your information. After 22 years of dictatorship, The Gambia’s new Coalition government is engrossed in finding ways to better harness the potential of its diverse Diaspora and engage them in meaningful national development. The move is part of President Barrow’s policy initiatives aimed at developing a National Diaspora Engagement Strategy to extend protection to Gambians in the Diaspora, as well as integrate them into the country’s national development agenda. A National Diaspora Strategy aimed at providing a comprehensive framework to manage migration for Gambia’s sustainable development, is currently being crafted by the Gambia government. The
The massive reaction to my short piece “Easier said than done” shows that many Gambians are concerned about our seeming fall back into the bad old days of intolerance, blind support for and uncritical obeisance to the parties and leaders we follow. There is evidently a sizeable middle ground of Gambian public opinion that recognizes the gravity of our continuing culture of intolerance and fanatical political jingoism. Almost ten months after the fall of the Jammeh dictatorship, Gambians are beginning to learn, among other things, that struggling for democracy does not necessarily mean being democratic in spirit. We are seeing ample evidence that it is one thing to clamor for the freedom of expression for everyone, but quite another thing to respect freedom of expression for everyone. We challenged the Jammeh dictatorship and shouted it down at every turn for being intolerant of our dissenting opinion; but we now display unbelievable intolerance for other people’s dissenting opinion. Yes I do remember you very well from your days as Headmaster of Farafenni Senior Secondary School. Sorry we didn't get to meet this past summer but now that the way is open I hope to visit home regularly. I look forward to seeing you again after so long.

And it is hard to be optimistic in Africa where potential moments of progressive transformation so often founder
There is no doubt that the new Gambia is faced with a myriad of complex problems. Our economy is broken. Our civil service is broken. Our educational system is in shambles. We still grapple with power cuts and water shortages. Our streets are in a horrible mess. The cult of personality is rampant in our public institutions. One hears stories of strange personal vendettas and vicious infighting within some of our most important public institutions. And one hears and sees instances of blatant corruption bred by a dysfunctional socio-economic and

*The Copycat State: Blind mimicry, neo-exceptionalism and the politics of failure in Africa*
Since independence, African governments have uncritically mimicked those practices of the nation-state system that suit their purposes and practiced a sort of African neo-exceptionalism that allows them to monopolize the political space and plunder or neglect their countries’ human and material resources. The result has been a failure of the nation-state system and a culture of chronic underdevelopment and poverty in Africa. This lecture examines the peculiarities of the copycat state and
The problem in The Gambia is that we are worshipers of our leaders be it social or political. We cannot see their wrongs and unless our personal interest is hypocritically threatened we remain blind loyalist. We make them perfect beings. We make them dictators. Once we see a rival of our " LOYAL" leader, we will attack, we will insult their honourable mothers to silence them in to submission. We tend to forget the national interest. We forget our country. Wow! Barrow is becoming Yahya quicker than Yahya became Yahya.
Maybe he should consider paying back struggling Gambian's who worked hourly wages to support his vandidature than begin philanthropy to Gambia that's paying his wages.
When did this guy get money more than his living cost to support his employer?
This is a hallmark of the beginning of another dictatorship and corruption.
I hear you Burama. I think it is the messaging that has to be re-framed to reflect the reality. I believe the vehicles were donated by the government, and not necessarily by Adama himself. Yes I totally agree with you that if not checked, President Barrow may take, as the saying goes in Mandinka .... translation.... "old road leads to old village". I think the information Minister should have his hands wrapped around this bad culture of the past. The motive is clear, make the President look great in the eyes of the citizens, which is generally acceptable. The same

A recent news report indicates that The Gambia government has just secured a $50 million grant from the Chinese government to build an international conference center. The question that immediately came to mind was who suggested the nature of the project for which this money will be spent? Did the Gambia government ask for $50 million dollars to build a conference center? Or was the project suggested and funded by the Chinese government? The underlying rationale for my question is whether this money could not be better used funding the education or training
"Jaraama machudoJola." Well stated Baba. If Kairaba Hotel could serve as the seat of government for so long, I wonder why any important conference cannot be held in one of the hotel's magnificent Ball Rooms. The Gambia has a long road to travel and a particularly daunting task of recovering from decades of economic injustice perpetuated by our own governments. We as a nation have to be able to identify our developments priorities to our donors, and indeed dictate how those funds should be spent. I couldn't agree more with you that Education and Skill Training programs are two key
A well written piece, Professor Jallow. I just read a similar piece on Gambia from someone who teaches at the New School in New York who as well among other recommendation emphasizes on the need to focus on people oriented policies. Bro Rene, that think-tank is no more I guess. It was something as you know, Halifa was in the lead to get it going but as we all witnessed, Barrow is following the advise of his father whose party members has a visceral hatred for anything PDOIS and Halifa.

There has been a lot of talk among Gambian communities these past several weeks and days about things that the Barrow administration should do and not do. Barrow himself recently acknowledged that he understands that Gambians are impatient and that they want to see some progress on the many tasks his government is expected to carry out. One should add that Gambians are impatient not only to see progress, but to see the right and proper kind of progress. Gambians can simply not afford to get it wrong this time around.

The Goal of our struggle is ‘TO MAKE GAMBIA A FUNCTIONING INSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY’. That powers/authorities of governing resides ONLY with the sovereign. That our government is a representation of the will of the sovereign people. That government has defined roles and responsibilities. That people hired to run government are to ensure those roles and responsibilities are fulfilled in accordance with law. That all public employees (from president to janitor) are servants and not masters of the sovereign people. The quest for that Gambia continued unabated.
Putting partisan issues aside we must commend Honourable Ousainou Numukunda Darboe for his statement. Acting in the national interest, he brushed aside any challenge to his leadership of the UDP. This is honourable and from now on we shall all call him honourable. He is forgiven for past errors and I hope his surrogates act in the spirit of his call.
