Follow-up, and thanks for the help! The culprit was sharing the ribbon connector with the two hard drives. Now, I've always believed that one puts hard drives on the primary ribbon, and other stuff like CDR's on the secondary. Well, now I'm confused on this, but moving the two hard drives to different ribbons--and using both primary and secondary connectors on the motherboard, took the C drive from 125k/sec transfer to 5125k/sec. Quite an improvement! Now, a Promise Ultra 66 seems in order.
