I received over 40 responses to the query about any possible relation
between celiac sprue and sulfa. There does not appear to be that
significant a relation, at least not in terms of anyone responding being
told by a doctor that the two were possibly connected. As to
correlation -- many indicated they knew about a sulfa allergy before
being diagnosed re. gluten intolerance/CD. There were a few responses
who were not allergic to sulfa, and found it very helpful in treating
certain conditions. There may be some value in the belief that CD
produces greater vulnerability, but that may vary greatly across the CD
population.

Perhaps the most important response is that those who have had an
initial experience have been told that a second could be far more
dangerous than the first. Rashes, hives, itching, etc. are the most
common symptoms reported. Some respondents indicated Bactrim was the
medication they reacted to; one wondered whether Macrodantin was part of
the sulfa family. Another wondered if anyone reacted to
natural sulfites in food.

If anyone wants to comment further on this issue, perhaps it would be
best to contact me directly, as this is not an issue to explore further
on this list. Thanks for
the replies. Raymie
