For my two cents, the best way to purchase the MS products is to become a
student. The academic price is excellent (~$150 for the Professional
version of Office 97) and it is completely legal and above board. What do
you need to qualify as a student or teacher? Go to you local technical
college and enroll in any night class for $25 and you qualify as a student,
then you can go to the campus bookstore and purchase your software. The
benefit to this method is that you also get involved with lifelong learning.
Another option is to call one of the catalog shops (pc connect or others)
and ask them for their requirements to meet the academic pricing structure.
