Gary:

If all you wish to do is make a photoshop document with a clear background,
just open in photoshop, double click on the background layer in the layers
pallet. Change the name to layer 0. . (It should do this automatically).
This is the important step. . . if you leave it titled "background", it
won't work

Then select the white, (background), and press delete. The white will
disappear, and the background will be transparent.

If you wish to make a transparent gif for the web, that would be another
story.
