Niche marketing for historic preservation is relatively expensive for any product line, and the hurdles to being successful at it are well summarized in your response. I have to admit a certain sense of technical challenge, though-- why couldn't we make it look more like "real" wood...I've seen some great adhesives for plastic substrates, and many plastic automobile parts are now routinely coated with all sorts of specialty coatings...
