One of the often overlooked methods to see what is going on is to reveal
styles used for paragraphs.

In the Normal View, select Tools, Options, View tab.  In the middle
section, set the Style Area Width to something greater than 0".  Click OK.

When the style column is displayed it can be sized to see the Styles used
in the paragraph.  The styles that often give problems are Headings1,2,3 if
used improperly.
