I had the same problem with my Packard Bell 75 MHz Pentium.  I actually
disabled the modem (tells you which jumpers to adjust in the manual or PB
website), but lost my mouse.  After all was said and done, I ended up
taking the modem and soundcard (all one board) out, and replacing both.
You can pick up a cheap sound board for $35 - $40 and it'll be worth it.
That solved my problem.  That's one reason that PB can sell systems so
cheap - modem and sound card on one board - what a joke.  Hope this
