Stimulated by the discussion of Nathen's Mom's unfortunate job situation (sorry to hear about that Nathen, I hope things look up for you both soon!) , I thought it would be interesting to get peoples opinions on whether they think Neanderthin is prohibitively more expensive than a "normal" diet. Im trying to get my family to try paleodieting, and they are worried about the cost. For me it doesnt actually seem to be much more expensive, if any. I guess I dont eat sirloin steak for breakfast every day, I tend to eat lots of ground beef, "neandersafe" tuna, canned sardines and free range eggs. In addition, I find that I tend to buy the cheaper cuts of meat on the whole now, the fattier parts like lamb shanks and chicken thighs, which I braise or make into soup, whereas previously I would have bought the leanest available. I guess ideally the diet should include only free range meat which would be more expensive, and organic veg, which are also a bit pricier. I may also be atypical in that I was already on a gluten free diet, so couldnt eat mac-and-cheese and tons of bread anyway before I started Neanderthin, so my view may be biased. I think though that weighing in the fact that I no longer eat lots of expensive snack and convenience food (candy, deli meats, ice cream, super-expensive glutenfree baked goods), for me the diet may actually be more economical!.
