The welcome message has been updated. Please keep for future reference. A shorter version of it can be found at: http://www.rawtimes.com/raw-food.html Best, Peter [log in to unmask] ===================================================== WELCOME! You have been added to the RAW-FOOD mailing list. PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE. THIS WILL ANSWER MANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS. The raw-food list is a support forum for people who enjoy diets high in raw foods or who wish to bring more raw foods into their diets. The list provides a supportive environment for a civil & constructive exchange of ideas and information. A wide range of raw diets (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian) is discussed and a balanced, non-fanatical approach to diet encouraged. No raw food diet will solve all the problems of the world, and the list does not welcome the diet zealotry that often is found in the raw food community. Lively debates are commonplace but flaming and personal attacks are not tolerated, and basic courtesy is requested of all participants towards other subscribers AND towards persons or groups not represented on the list. Raw-food is an easy-going and open forum with ample room for the expression of all points of view and in the spirit of information sharing and open exchange, the list is uncensored and any subscriber can post to it. It should be kept in mind that any information obtained from this list might not be accurate or appropriate for everyone. Each reader must draw their own conclusions about how to use any information obtained from the list, and it is strongly suggested that each reader does his/her own analysis of any claims made. In case of a medical problem, it is recommended that a qualified health practitioner is consulted. To insure privacy, the names of raw-food subscribers are not available to anybody. There are a large number of subscribers who only read but do not post. and only by posting is the identity of a subscriber revealed. NB. The acronyms "RAF" and "ROF" stand for "Raw Animal Food" and "Raw Organ Food" respectively. They are used from time to time on the list. Moderation: The discussion will be moderated in the following manner. All posts will be sent out to the list automatically by the list server without prior screening. HENCE, MODERATION WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER THE MESSAGE IS POSTED RATHER THAN BEFORE. If a post does not meet the above protocols or is off topic, the moderator will post a message to the list and/or in private responding to the original post and explaining the issue involved. If the poster continues to post off topic or in disregard of the above protocols, the poster will be suspended from the list for an appropriate period of time. Questions or concerns about list moderation should be addressed to Peter Brandt <[log in to unmask] Peter is moderator for the list. Questions about subscribing, unsubscribing, posting or receiving messages should be addressed to David Karas <[log in to unmask] POSTING GUIDELINES: ------------------- 1. To keep the list tidy and avoid unnecessary clutter, when responding to a message, edit out everything except the parts you are actually commenting on. 2. Please identify the author of the message you are replying to. 3. If the content of a thread changes make sure that the change is reflected in the subject line. This makes it easier to follow the dialog and conduct searches in the archives. If on digest, make sure that your responses have appropriate subject lines. 4. If using a signature file at the end of your message, please limit it to three or four lines. The content of signature lines may be subject to moderation. 5. Please note: HTML and/or attachments can not be used. 6. Off topic threads are ok if kept within reason. 7. "Flames" of any kind should be avoided. In a nutshell, the basic requirement is that posts be polite, considerate and non-confrontational. 8. When posting, a minimal clarification of what is personal beliefs/experience and what is established facts is expected as well as using a reasonable amount of discretion in responding to questions and counter arguments. You will receive a confirmation message from listserv with a code in the subject line. To be subscribed you must reply to this message to listserv with the letters OK in the body of your reply. Please note that only subscribers can post to the list. UNSUBSCRIPTION: --------------- To unsubscribe send an e-mail to [log in to unmask] and place in the body of the e-mail the following text: SIGNOFF RAW-FOOD RAW-FOOD LIST ADDRESSES: ------------------------ The following e-mail addresses are used in relation with this list: 1. The list address: [log in to unmask] Messages sent to this address go to all list members. This is called "posting" to the list. The list address should never be used for administrative requests regarding your subscription or questions about the list server, as this would unnecessarily annoy other list subscribers. You can only post to the list from the account under which you are subscribed. If your post is rejected for no apparent reason, contact one of the listowners listed below. 2. The listserv address: [log in to unmask] This is the address to which you sent your subscription request, and it should be used for all requests that can be handled automatically by the LISTSERV program. This includes changing your name or address, unsubscribing, changing your subscription options, retrieving files from the file server, searching the list archives, etc. You will find a list of the most commonly used LISTSERV commands in the next section. 3. The listowner's address: David Karas <[log in to unmask] 4. The moderator's address: Peter Brandt <[log in to unmask] These are the people in charge of keeping the list running. If you have any technical or administrative problem that you cannot solve with LISTSERV commands, contact David Karas <[log in to unmask] This would include problems such as having your postings to the list rejected, or if you think some RAW-FOOD messages don't get through to you. COMMON LISTSERV COMMANDS: ------------------------- This file describes some of the common commands that you may need to send to the LISTSERV. You can generally send any number of commands in a single message, as long as each is on a separate line. (Exceptions to this rule will be noted.) This is not a complete list of commands, and many of these commands have other options not discussed here. More information about LISTSERV and database search commands is available: see the "INFO" command described below. Remember to send commands to [log in to unmask]; don't send them to [log in to unmask], which is the address where you post messages for everyone else to read. The common commands are as follows: SUBSCRIBE SIGNOFF SET MAIL SET NOMAIL SET DIGEST SET NODIGEST QUERY GET Database search Each will now be described in more detail. ---------- 1. SUBSCRIBE RAW-FOOD YourFirstName YourLastName This is the command you used to subscribe to the RAW-FOOD mail list. Your subscription address is automatically detected, so you do not need to enter it. You will only be allowed to post from that address. If you want to post from more than one account, you can subscribe from several addresses and set all but one to "NOMAIL", as explained below. ---------- 2. SIGNOFF RAW-FOOD This command removes you from the RAW-FOOD list. If you are forced to change Internet providers and cannot unsubscribe from your old e-mail address, please send an e-mail note to the listowner and he will unsubscribe you from your old e-mail address. ---------- 3. SET RAW-FOOD MAIL Sets your subscription option so that you receive each message as it is posted. This is the default setting when your subscription begins. ---------- 4. SET RAW-FOOD NOMAIL Sets your subscription option so that you will receive no mail from the list. You are still able to post messages to the list. This is useful if you have more than one account, or if you want to leave the list temporarily (e.g. when going on vacation). Use "SET RAW-FOOD MAIL" or "SET RAW-FOOD DIGEST" to go back to normal. ---------- 5. SET RAW-FOOD DIGEST Sets your subscription option to digest. Instead of receiving each message as it is posted, you will receive one daily message with all postings for that day. If you use this feature, do not use the reply feature of your software or the entire digest may be re-sent to the whole subscriber list! Instead, a new message should be created with the applicable information and comments. ---------- 6. SET RAW-FOOD NODIGEST Sets your subscription option to individual messages instead of receiving a daily digest. You will receive each message as it is posted. ---------- 7. QUERY RAW-FOOD This returns a summary of your current subscription options. If it appears that the RAW-FOOD list is no longer sending you messages, you should issue the "QUERY RAW-FOOD" command to determine your status: If the returned information shows NOMAIL and NOPOST this change was probably due to error notices caused by your e-mail address. You can return to receiving normal mail with the "SET RAW-FOOD MAIL" command (see the description above). There are many reasons why your e-mail address may be causing error notices, including a full mailbox or transmission problems along the pathway. The high volume of error notices we get makes it impossible for us to research every notice. We do try to warn you of the problem, but usually you will not receive our warning for the same reason that the error notice is being generated. If the bounced message appears to be temporary, the ID is set to digest mode. ---------- 8. INDEX RAW-FOOD This returns a list of all the RAW-FOOD files available from the file server. --------- 9. GET This retrieves a named file from the file server, eg. GET RAW-FOOD WELCOME will retrieve this welcome message. ---------- 10. INFO Returns a list of LISTSERV help files. Send "INFO REFCARD" for a reference card on LISTSERV commands. ----------- 11. Database Search The RAW-FOOD archives can be searched by sending a query to the listserv. You can obtain a help file with the following command to the listserv: GET RAW-FOOD DBSEARCH THANKS for your support. Best wishes and good health. Peter Brandt David Karas
