EASI Webinar: Using a Free Screen Reader to Use the Free Openoffice.org
Suite

Presenter: Norm Coombs Professor emeritus RIT.

Thursday July 21 at 11 Pacific, noon Mountain, 1 Centraland 2 Eastern

*NOTE! this is moved from July 12!! *

NVDA has grown into a full-fledged and free screen reader. It used to be
the 'poor person's' screen reader, but now it competes in many
situations with the commercial screen readers. OpenOffice grew out of
StarOffice. It runs on several operating systems especially Windows,
Linux and the Mac. The mission of OpenOffice is to create, as a
community, the leading international office suite that will run on all
major platforms and provide access to all functionality and data through
open-component based APIs and an XML-based file format.

OpenOffice Components:

  * Writer: aword processor similar to Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.
  * Calc: a spreadsheet similar to Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3.
  * Impress: a presentation program similar to Microsoft PowerPoint or
    Apple Keynote.
  * Draw: a vector graphics editor similar to the drawing functions in
    Microsoft Office.
  * Math: a tool for creating and editing mathematical formulas, similar
    to Microsoft Equation Editor.
  * Base: a database management program similar to Microsoft Access.

This Webinar will quickly provide an overview of the OpenOffice suite of
applications. It will focus primarily on familiarizing attendees on the
main features and functionality of Writer and focus on its accessibility
for users with disabilities. It will demonstrate its ability to read
several documents and to create content in several formats including
ePub. When commercial applications constantly roll out new versions,
users can be frustrated with their changes and the need to upgrade.
OpenOffice.org does change to keep up with technical changes but
normally it maintain a standard look and feel while keeping current with
technical advantages.
