Thanks Burama. I got your proposals and that is why I engaged you the very first time on the Radio you remember? Please take the time to breakdown some of the points.. For example many of our people hardly understands what you meant by "Leverage" so when we begin to get into the details it begins to make more sense. Anyway, keep it up and find time to come back to the radio.

Thanks

Whether you noticed or not you have begin to come to what I have been saying………all of those you talk about is called POLITICAL LEVERAGE.

The simpler way to garner such leverage is to come up with 'A DEMOCRATIC AGENDA' and seriously present it to all those you mentioned. This will tightened the noose on Yahya to come to the table. Not because he likes it but force into. Those negotiation will begin to strip him of the powers he illegally assumed including his control over elections. It’s an expensive program and will take time. Most people want to do it for the next election cycle. If there is one I will go for it but I didn’t see that happening. Politics is nasty, there are others out there who are interested in Yahya staying. Is a game we will learn to play to win

Am not sure you read my proposal or you read but said ………..oh..it’s Burama again and did not give it a thought.

Challenge the activists on your radio to stop empty rhetoric and tell you what they think should be done. Bunch of these can be compile and organize into A NATIONAL ACTION PLAN.

AJAARAMA BUIH!

Thanks Burama, on the question "How do we get election reforms"?

Well, some good progress was being made by the Group of 6 before petty politics got on the way as to who authorize who.. The group of six (G6).. had met several times, crafted a plan to engage Rev Jessey Jackson to mediate between the parties and Jammeh - I wasn't very optimistic on it but it was a great start.

I think that should be expanded to include the ECOWAS who boycotted the last elections base on its deficiency and the AU.. Those of us in the Diaspora should engage the EU, organizations like The Carter Foundation... Every economic, diplomatic and bilateral cooperation with Jammeh MUST be tied to Electoral reform and Human Rights.. We can even engage regional leaders like Nigerian President and UN to bring about the plight of our Democracy in Gambia...We must be credibly present in every International platform to represent the plight of Gambia!

Gambia's human rights and Jammeh's dictatorship is now SOLIDLY placed on the Map. He is in the Radar of the International media and therefore it won't take moving the mountains to convince people that he is the wrong guy and we need the reform. Wave of change are blowing across the Globe and Jammeh is on alert.

Hope this example helps as well.. just my thoughts and position

This is a better one. At least you advance some ideas.

I will go with all of those except allying with the opposition and/or helping them.

My view is we (diaspora) should stay purely democratic forces. Let opposition or should I say parties organize themselves as seen buy their members fit. We engage the parties on fight for democratic causes and not on their quest for office. That is very likely to earn us credibility both amongst Gambians and the international partners.

Again seeing some of what you have in mind differently is not important. Important is we come up with 100s or 1000s these action points  will challenge us.  Because the next logical question will begin to ask is but how do we get election reforms………….that logical analysis leads you to its natural conclusion. There you have a practical plan. That plan will inform the type of vehicle necessary. Resources! etc!

Hope you challenge your guest at the radio not to make blanket statement but come up with proposals. Lots of time burnt already.

Bravo again!

Yero,

I have not questioned anybody's right to form an organization... for all I care people can form whatever they want. My point is that within the eyes of the public and for the purpose of unity it doesn't sit well to form a lone organization and appoint yourself the CEO. I was simply giving a feedback to Burama on how it appears and how many people may be reluctant to join what appears to be a personally owned organization...

In any case I have resolved this with Burama and I understand the anxiety around it... The fact remains that we don't have an immediate answer to Burama's direct question "How do we take down Jammeh". I said all options are on the table.. and it is going to take multiple scenarios to bring about change in Gambia. Not a single individual or entity has the solution...

I happen to believe that elections can bring about change in Gambia and that the democratic process is the most viable and universally accepted norm of bringing about change. The following can bring about election victory in Gambia... And I wouldn't care who wins as long as the process is democratic and represents Gambia's interest...

- A strong push for electoral reform before participating in any elections ( this has to involve international partners)
- A strong coalition of opposition parties (National interest over partisan) will dislodge Jammeh from power
- Opposition parties working together on a common platform and speak in unison will dispel the fear in Gambians (thus energize the people to push him out - Elections are about momentum and hope )
- Join operation of all Gambian organizations in the Diaspora to raise fund and fund the operations of opposition parties will eventually bring about thousands of Gambians out in the street as we saw in Brikama and Buffer zone who are sick and tired of this regime.
- A strong push for International and regional targeted sanctions against Jammeh (including but not limited to travel bans, asset freeze will cripple the Jammeh regime)

These are just few practical solutions we can pursue within a reasonable period and bring the change we need in Gambia. We can then begin to lay down the foundation of building a Democratic society with civil society institutions and nurture an open society. This is my position. Is it the most viable probably NOT... The time to move to the next level beyond criticism is long over due...

Hope that helps..

Mawdo Demba -

Burama have some legitimate points. He is doing the right thing and he is very open to discussing with others what is right. He is entirely fine to form his own organization and it is his right as a world citizen to do that. At some point, maybe, just maybe, any organization interested in his partnership, can reach out to him to broker a deal. He have a good reputation of following what he says with action work. While I may not agree with some of his methods about the way forward, I think he is within right to do so.

Take an example with the media outlets; they are all doing good, but everyone would rather stick with what represent his or her ideologies and not joining the other. The joining has caused many problems as seen.  Sometimes the merrier the better.

In anyway, you should allow these organizations do their own PR. They are all in this forum and were here before I personally arrived here. They should come here and do their own PR. : )

I am just sharing with you that last week, I got info that another diaspora organization like CORDEG and GCC is about to hatch soon. So far, it constitutes of 3 members. So again, people have to be satisfied, if not, they will keep looking for options, organizations, groups, etc...that fits and represent them.

I like your ideas about unity at times and you do have a  power house of good and progressive ideas, but some times, you are too married to your ideology, especially the defense strategy in your arguments. We have to break loose from some of these ropes....and proclaim our independence and say, "Free at last! Free at last! Free at last!"

Best always,
Yero.
