For my generation, the death of Mandela marks the end of Africa’s liberation struggle
Thandika Mkandawire Blog Editor LSE’s African Chair Thandika Mkandawire suffered imprisonment for his role in the struggle for the independence of Malawi and 30 years of exile. In this post, he writes about the role Nelson Mandela played in inspiring his generation of political activists. It is difficult to write about Nelson Mandela without sounding sycophantic or as if engaged in uncritical hero worship. Mandela’s stature and personality left little room for other sentiments other than (...)

The Mandela I Knew
Saths Cooper During my incarceration in the same single-cell block in Robben Island Maximum Security Prison with Nelson Rohihlala Mandela between 1977 to 1982 I got to know him intimately and had the advantage of interacting with him on a daily basis. These were less than ideal conditions, often fraught with the tensions that accompany incarceration, but such hardships provide the opportunity for the best and worst in ourselves to emerge. The perspicacity of the man was demonstrated the (...)

Hamba Kahle, Madiba: the contestation between symbolism and mythology
The process of mythologizing represents a contestation between symbolism and mythology, writes Firoze Manji. The greatest disservice that we could pay to Mandela is to allow the complexity, courage and humanity of his long life to be reduced to a fairy tale. Mandela represents for so many the finest values of courage, liberation and freedom. Firoze Manji As Mandela passes on to join the ancestors, a wave of sadness sweeps the entire planet. There can be few places and few people who are (...)

The Logic of Nuremberg (La logique de Nuremberg)
Mahmood Mamdani Where mass violence is involved, writes Mamdani, there is always a choice between the judicial approach, enforced by the victors or by external powers, which tends to exclude the losing parties from any political settlement, and negotiation, which necessarily involves all parties in discussions about the future, whatever the crimes they have committed. After the Cold War, our response to mass violence has largely been determined by the model of Nuremberg: in Rwanda or (...)

De l’Afrique marginalisée à l’Afrique émergente : critique de deux mythes contemporains (From marginalized Africa to Africa rising: critique of two contemporary myths)

Egypt: Revolution or Restoration? (Egypte: révolution ou restauration?)
Aijaz Ahmad: Egypt: Revolution or Restoration? In less than three years—January 2011 to August 2013— Egypt has experienced two massive uprisings of historically unprecedented scale. The first of these uprisings broke the impasse that had beset Egyptian politics since the defeat of 1967— especially since the advent of Sadat at the helm of the Egyptian state— and in the process overthrew the Mubarak dictatorship. The second, more recent and even larger uprising, dubbed by some as ‘June 30 (...)

Teaching and Learning in Context: Why Pedagogical Reforms Fail in Sub-Saharan Africa by Richard Tabulawa
Teaching and Learning in Context: Why Pedagogical Reforms Fail in Sub-Saharan Africa attempts to explain why pedagogical change has not occurred in spite of the much energy and resources that have been committed to such reforms. It takes us inside what the author calls ‘the socio-cultural world of African classrooms’ to help us understand the reasons teachers dominate classroom life and rely disproportionately on didactic methods of teaching. Its conceptual analyses capture the best of both (...)

Call for papers: Critical perspectives on BRICS
For publication in March 2014, Edited by Patrick Bond and Ana Garcia: We welcome articles about BRICS from a critical perspective. There are many avenues for publishing about the BRICS from an optimistic, uncritical standpoint, not least the BRICS governments’ own academic ‘think tank’ network and the mainstream media. The Rise and the Fall of the South African Peasantry by Colin Bundy
Historicizing the African Peasantry with Colin Bundy Chambi Chachage Colin Bundy’s (1979) seminal book on The Rise and the Fall of the South African Peasantry, aptly dedicated to the Marxist ANC/SACP leader and author of The Peasant Revolt, Govan Mbeki (1964), is an attempt at a “corrective history” of the South African peasantry. It is a counter to the then “dominant prevailing liberal tradition of South African historiography,” which “posit[ed] the fundamental and inherent weakness of the (...)

US interventions in East Africa: from the Cold War to the ’war on terror’
Amrit Wilson During the Cold War years, while British colonialists were being driven out of East Africa, the first US intervention in the region occurred in Zanzibar. In Britain, the attack on the upmarket Westgate shopping mall in Kenya in which 130 people lost their lives, is rapidly fading from public memory, already ascribed to just another act of ’mindless violence’ perpetrated by Islamic (...)

Are Developing Countries Waving or Drowning?
Yılmaz Akyüz More than five years since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, the world economy has shown few signs of stabilising and moving towards strong and sustained growth. While deleveraging continues to stifle private demand, economic activity is further restrained by a fiscal drag in the U.S. and Europe, as governments have turned to fiscal orthodoxy after an initial reflation. There has been excessive reliance on monetary policy, especially in the U.S., through provision of (...)
