I got a whole courtyard of these in my 1922 apartment house - we walk right past big windows looking out on it on our way to our fancy apartments.  It's supposed to look nice, but the paving tile - 6x6s - is really grimy and ugly.
 
I haven't even tried detergent or soap but ... anyone dealt with this problem before?
