Most Australian lamb is grass-fed for most of the year. But from mid-summer, you will see graziers feeding hay to sheep from the backs of their utes (that's "pick-ups") if you drive through farmland. In a drought year farmers need to truck in fodder from interstate and this may include grain. At these times you see semi-trailers piled high with hay travelling in convoy along the main highways. Some Australian lamb is finished on grain, but if you are buying Australian or New Zealand lamb it's likely the animals will have spent >99% of their life on pasture or hay - not grains.
